I want to talk to you about a difference between building a
speaking business versus building a speaking practice. You know
what those two different things are speaking practice is really
like a doctor's practice or a dentist practice is all about the
individual expert, in this case, you as the speaker, so it's about
building your personal brand. A speaking business, on the other
hand, is something that can continue without you and can perhaps be
sold on doesn't necessarily need your day to day involvement. So a
lot of people say they're building a speaking business when really
they're actually building a speaking practice. And there's nothing
wrong with that. But the way that you build it is slightly
different. If you're building a speaking practice is all about
trying to get your hourly rate as high as possible. It's about
trying to ensure you're building your personal brand, and its
really ensuring that you're making the best possible use of your
time. And speaking business, on the other hand, is about building
systems, processes. A team, a corporate brand, obviously, they can
go on the past be sold and can continue without you. Now there's
nothing wrong with either of these options, they're both equally
valid. But always be asking yourself what am I trying to build
here? Am I trying to build a speaking business or speaking
practice?
